Paris, January. During the lavish Epiphany celebration at the Louvre, the astrologer Sébastien de Mauléon, summoned from Toulouse to read the new year in the stars, utters a sinister prophecy before the courtMars will betray the king, Venus will weep bloodand collapses dead at the feet of Queen Anne of Austria. An astrolabe engraved with symbols belonging to no known tradition is found on his body, and beside the corpse someone has placed, with deliberate care, the inverted fleur-de-lis of France: not an accident, but a challenge.
Louis XIII fears a political conspiracy, Richelieu suspects a secret society, but it is d'Artagnan who takes up the gauntlet. Together with Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, the young Gascon ventures into a world concealed beneath the visible one: astrologers, Kabbalists, horoscope forgers, and booksellers dealing in forbidden texts. Aramis deciphers a series of celestial charts depicting not the present sky but a night exactly three hundred years earlierthe night of the death of Philip the Fair and the burning of the Templars. The murders that begin to punctuate Paris reproduce, one by one, the positions of the planets on that distant night: a tower collapses, a royal horse goes mad, an ambassador dies in flames. Magic or political calculation? The question becomes the beating heart of the investigation.
The musketeers discover the existence of a brotherhood that signs its messages "Astra mortua vigilant"the dead stars keep watch: a sect born from the ashes of the Templars, convinced that history does not flow in a straight line but turns like a wheel, and that France is governed by an invisible geometry of numbers and angles that those who know how to read it can not only predict but bend to their will. Guiding them toward the heart of the mystery is a figure as dangerous as she is fragile: a woman who calls herself the Reader, raised among ephemerides to interpret charts and determine when to strike, and now fleeing the very brotherhood that fashioned her. Between her and d'Artagnan, a fragile alliance takes shape, threaded with mistrust and an attraction neither dares to name.
While Porthos infiltrates an academy of noblemen fascinated by the stars in disguise, and Athos traces the connections linking the dead astrologer to a mysterious baron, the net tightens. Looming over them all is the Geometer, a leader whose face has never been seen, who devises his schemes with the cold precision of a man who counts his words before speaking them. The prophecies that come true, the suspicion of a traitor hidden among the musketeers themselves, stakes involving not merely a life but an entire kingdom's trust in its sovereigns: everything converges upon a single night, the night of the eclipse, when the sun will darken in broad daylight and the court will gather in prayer among the towers of Notre-Dame.
It is there, suspended between stone and empty air, as the moon bites into the sun and panic rises among the faithful, that d'Artagnan must face his most terrible trial: not with his sword, but with a choice. For the Geometer's geometry has anticipated every move, even the rebellion of those who oppose it, and the only way to break the most perfect figure will be to do what no celestial chart can contemplate.
A swashbuckling novel steeped in a dark, hypnotic atmosphere, where the adventure of the four musketeers intertwines with the shadowy fascination of astrology, political conspiracy, and a relentless question: are we masters of our own destiny, or merely pawns on a chessboard laid out by a distant hand?
