A sailor could be taken from his livelihood and compelled into naval service by a system that reached far beyond the waterfront. This historical account examines impressment as both an instrument of British sea power and a source of upheaval for working men, families and communities. Its focus remains firmly on the pressed sailor, caught between the Navy's demand for manpower and the disruption imposed on ordinary life. Legal foundations and organisational machinery reveal how coercion became an established method of British naval recruitment. The work follows the press-gang afloat and ashore, showing who was liable to seizure and how gangs operated across maritime and inland communities. Confinement, examination and transport form part of the system's human reality, while evasion and resistance expose the limits of official authority. London and the Thames provide a vivid geographical focus without narrowing the account's wider reach. Merchant trade, civil opposition and corruption complicate any simple story of wartime necessity. By bringing land and sea perspectives together, the narrative traces the pressure exerted on employment, commerce and local society as the Navy sought to maintain its strength. Detailed attention to naval impressment and seafaring resistance turns an institutional history into an account of state power experienced at close quarters, where recruitment policy could alter lives and unsettle entire communities. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
