Following the 1965 publication of *Ariel* -- two years after her death -- Sylvia Plath (Boston, 1932 -- London, 1963) became a towering figure in contemporary poetry. Yet many readers are unaware that the original manuscript Plath left behind differs significantly from the collection that turned her into a legend. This edition finally restores the book to its original form, featuring the selection and arrangement established by Sylvia Plath herself. In addition to a facsimile of the manuscript, the volume includes various drafts of "Ariel" -- the poem that gives the collection its title -- and the notes Plath prepared for the BBC regarding key poems such as "Lady Lazarus" and "Daddy." Frieda Hughes, Plath's daughter, has written an illuminating foreword explaining the reasons for the differences between the previously known edition of *Ariel* (prepared by the poet Ted Hughes -- Sylvia Plath's husband and Frieda's father) and the original version presented here. This publication offers insight into the author's creative process and allows for a re-evaluation of her legacy and extraordinary poetic vision.
