    Time is never promised

Some books are emotional. Others leave you staring at the ceiling, trying to recover from what you’ve just read. The Last Letter belongs firmly in the second category. A word of advice: make sure you’re in a good emotional place before picking it up, because this story might tear you apart. At its heart, this is a story about love, grief, guilt and the family we choose to build. One of the questions that stayed with me was: what makes someone a father? Is it biology, or is it showing up, caring, protecting and choosing to love someone else’s children as your own? I loved how Yarros explored this through the relationships between the characters. The book also touches on the terrifying uncertainty of illness, the financial strain that can accompany it and the impossible feeling of wanting to protect the people you love from everything. The writing is fluid and dialogue-driven, making the story incredibly easy to devour. I particularly enjoyed the letters woven throughout the narrative. They add intimacy and emotional depth, allowing the characters to express feelings that aren’t always easy to put into words. And then there’s the emotional roller coaster. Every time I thought the characters might finally catch a break, I became suspicious. Surely there couldn’t be that much book left just for everyone to live happily ever after? What ultimately stayed with me was the reminder that time is never guaranteed. We can become so consumed by our worries, responsibilities and even very real crises that we forget to appreciate the moments we still have. Say “I love you.” Be present. Don’t assume there will always be another opportunity. I cried. A lot. But I also appreciated that Yarros doesn’t simply use suffering for shock value. She explores what it means to carry grief, live with guilt and somehow find the courage to keep loving. 5/5 stars: Heartbreaking, beautiful and a powerful reminder to love while we have the chance.

I do not recommend this book, except you want your heart broken.

I knew what I was getting into: BookTok gave plenty of warnings about the heartbreak ahead. Still, I naively thought, “How bad could it really be?” I was wrong. This book completely destroyed me and broke my heart into a million pieces. The story centers on Ella, a resilient single mother fighting every single day to provide for her twin kids, and Chaos, her late brother’s best friend, with whom she has developed a deep, emotional connection through letters. When he finally steps into her real life, an incredibly intense, beautiful love story begins to unfold. But Rebecca Yarros shows zero mercy to her characters, or her readers. What makes this book hit so hard is its pure, unvarnished intensity. The struggles of single motherhood feel overwhelmingly real, and the romance is breathtakingly deep. But then comes the plot. The twists caught me completely off guard and hit with an emotional force that left me utterly shattered. Writting this review, makes me cry again it is that bad. So if you’re looking for a light, breezy romance, stay far away. But if you’re the kind of reader who craves that raw, deeply moving experience the kind where you weep so hard that you wake up the next morning with horribly swollen eyes: this book is an absolute must-read.

    Heart breaking and healing

"Whether it was reading her letters, or staring into her eyes, she had a power over me that was worse than a bottle of tequila for loosening my tongue. She made me want to tell her everything, and that was dangerous to both of us." - S.85 Beckett "I don't care how many hours it takes. I'm here. I'm not leaving you." - S.124 Beckett "You think you ruined Ella? There's no man on the planet who could do that. Don't flatter yourself. The only reason she's not here is because you're not worth her time. Now get your checkbook." - S.249 Beckett Ich weine, wieder absolut wunderschön.

In "The Last Letter" von Rebecca Yarros bin ich ja total blind reingegangen.
