Sketch of the Life of Alexander Wilson is a biographical work written by George Ord and published in 1828. The book provides a detailed account of the life and achievements of Alexander Wilson, a Scottish-American poet, ornithologist, and illustrator who is best known for his work on the American ornithology. The book begins with a brief introduction to Wilson's early life in Scotland and his eventual emigration to America, where he worked as a weaver, a schoolteacher, and a bookseller before turning his attention to the study of birds. The book then goes on to describe Wilson's travels across America, during which he observed and documented numerous species of birds, and his subsequent publication of the nine-volume American Ornithology, which included detailed descriptions and illustrations of over 250 species of birds. The book also explores Wilson's personal life, including his marriage, his friendships with other naturalists and artists, and his struggles with poverty and ill health.Overall, Sketch of the Life of Alexander Wilson provides a comprehensive and engaging portrait of one of America's most important ornithologists and naturalists, and sheds light on the challenges and triumphs of scientific discovery in the early years of the United States. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
