Pierce the Ploughman's Crede is a Middle English poem that was written around 1394 AD. The poem is an allegory about the Christian faith and the narrator, Pierce, is a ploughman who is searching for the truth about religion. The poem is divided into two parts, the first part is a confession of faith and the second part is a critique of the Church. The poem is written in the form of a creed, which is a statement of belief. Pierce's creed is simple and emphasizes the importance of living a good life and treating others with kindness and compassion. The poem also critiques the Church for its corruption and greed, and calls for reform. This edition of Pierce the Ploughman's Crede is edited by Walter W. Skeat, a renowned scholar of Middle English literature. The book includes an introduction that provides historical and cultural context for the poem, as well as notes and glosses to help readers understand the language and references in the text. Overall, Pierce the Ploughman's Crede is an important work of Middle English literature that provides insight into the religious and social issues of the time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
